The stoves were hot. The embers of fired up grills eagerly churned out the sweet smell of flame charged delicacies. The taunts and jeers of long time friends and colleagues turned one-day competitors were playful, yet colorful. But, most importantly – the food was delicious!…
During the Easter holiday weekend, some of the country’s top traditional and social media personalities came together for the Showman eBistro Ultimate Chef Cook-Off at the Gladstone Road Farmer’s Market. The nine teams (Hot Grease, The Vaccinators, The Islanders, Gimme More, Silver Swagga, Porkchop, Purple Pleasure, Da Juice & The Key Lime Underdogs) put their cooking prowess to the test while running their mouths in a fun and lighthearted battle for bragging rights (and prizes.)
Their biggity-ness bolstered by the talents of professional chefs and several of Showman’s talented homecooks, saw the teams confidently race into the Farmer’s Market to gather as much fresh and home-grown produce as they could before crafting their culinary creations. The outdoor market turned culinary battleground was soon filled with the sweet, fragrant smell of delicious food, and as familiar faces from television, radio, and social media began developing their dishes, mixologist and global Angostura brand Ambassador, Marv Cunningham, wrangled the teams to create original cocktails that would compliment their feasts.
For those not taking part, they could relax and enjoy the Showman cigar lounge or sip on a bit of Angostura rums from the Caribbean Wines & Spirits tents as the teams fanned the flames of competition (literally and figuratively.)
After several hours of toiling in the Showman competition kitchens, team Hot Grease triumphantly walked away as the winners with an impressive menu that included a Coconut Curry Veggie Soup served in a Charged Coconut Bowl, followed by their take on a classic Griot that included a Plantain Cup with Spicy Picklez and a Mango, Pineapple, and Coconut rum Chutney. Their winning entry was capped off with a Sweet Potato Grits, topped with a Snapper Fillet and complimented by a Coconut Rum Tomato Sauce and topped with a Conch and Papaya Ceviche.
While there was only one winning team, each competitor undoubtedly walked away with an experience that they will not soon forget!
